Since Joomla is one of the most widely known CMS brands that people use to manage their websites, it’s no wonder why more and more people would consider availing of their services. Today, people would like to know how Joomla can be installed to get started with their own websites. Joomla is pretty easy to set if you follow these guidelines:
First of all, it is important for you to know that you need your very own Joomla package. The Joomla package is found on Joomla Forge that can be downloaded on the web. It is a good idea to download the latest version because it has the latest useful features like advanced bug fixes and patches. You’ll findthe latest full package at the bottom of the forge. Once you have downloaded the lates package, you cans start installing Joomla.

If you do not have anything on your domain at all, you can install it. Once you have downloaded the package, you must first decompress it to your hard drive and then you need to have it uploaded on your computer. Decompress and start to open with your FTP client. Once you have opened it, Login with your Ftp client to your website and begin to upload all your important files in the directory you like.
Prepare your database while waiting for all the files to be uploaded. Login to your cpanel and proceed to the “MySQL databases” menu. Look for the “add db” button and type the name of the new database. Select the “add db” button to create the new database. After which, you can start adding a user to the database you’ve just created. You can do this by clicking on to the “Add User” button. It is important to remember the password/s.
Once you have accomplished this task, you can now add your user to the database. There are 2 dropdown spots for databases that enable you to see a user and a database. Select your new user and database and click on “Adduser to DB”. Once you have successfully added our user to the Database, you can now close the Cpanel.
After the upload is completed, you can start setting up your Joomla applications. Start by opening your browser and type the address bar needed. The browser ill load the first web page during installation. You should be also to see something that says, “Joomla pre installation check” if you have successfully started installing.
If you have trouble with starting off, be sure to check if you have uploaded all your files correctly, if you have uploaded them on a separate directory within your site or if you have an Apache /SQL/PHP server. If everything is running smoothly so far, you can proceed to the next step by clicking “Next”. The “Terms and Conditions” should be read carefully. After your’e done, you can click the “next” button found on the top-right.
The database configuration will be soon filled by the Joomla software you are installing. Your host name will usually be “localhost”. Fill out the spaces provided for you with the name of the database, username and password. The MySQL Table prefix can be left “jos_”.. If this is your first installation, click the check box that says, “Install Sample data” and click next to proceed. A window will pop up and will ask you if all the information you have written are correct. Verify these information once more and click “Ok”. Proceed to the next step and type in the name of your site and click next. You can change the name of your site if you want to eventually.
After this, confirm your URL path, your email and password. Your email and pass word will serve as your “Super Administrator” e-mail and password. Type them in and remember the password well because you will not have the privilege of recovering your lost password once you have forgotten them. Your user name will automatically be “admin” and you can modify it eventually in the “Administration Section”. After which, press next.
There are two popular ways to upload and install Joomla on your website. The first (and simplest) is using the automated Joomla installation feature that your web hosting service provider may have activated on your “Control Panel”. The second way to upload Joomla and install it is to do it manually. This may seem kind of difficult initially, but it is very simple, if you understand how. In either of the two cases, you must have a web hosting account and be able to access it to be able to go ahead. You can’t use a free blog hosting account (Blogspot, etc) to do this. Below, I will give you a step by step blueprint for uploading and installing Joomla manually in 5 minutes or less. Here we go:
- Download Joomla: The first step would be to of course download the latest Joomla installation package. You can do this by visiting Joomla.org and following the instructions to download the Joomla package.
- Create a Joomla Installation Database: Now, login to your Joomla web hosting account and open the MySQL database creation and management program. A list of your databases and database user details are in the MySQL area of your Control Panel. Now, you should create a database and a username and password to go with it. Next, add the username to the database and give it all the privileges. This is simple as the interface is easy to follow. (But you can also watch the video instead if that is preferable to you.) This user ID and password and its database are what you will use to install Joomla on your website.
- Upload Joomla: The next step is to determine where you want the Joomla installation to be and upload it to that. If you want to install Joomla on the main website/full domain name (eg mywebsite.com, etc), then you should go to the home directory and upload Joomla to it.
- The Actual Joomla Installation: This is the simplest and most self-fulfilling part of the whole process. But you should also be careful not to make mistakes here or you may never be able to install the Joomla software correctly. You should also take note of the Joomla admin user name and password that you create during this process, to prevent losing access to your account. During the Joomla installation, you will put in such details as the name of the database that you created in step #2 and the username and password that you attached to it. You will put in the name and title of your website (great for Joomla SEO) and your email address to be used as the admin email in case you forget your Joomla admin login username and password. I would advise that you save all your login details in a secure place (like a random file on your computer or your brain [yeah, memorize it!] ) to avoid discomfort later on when you start the business of designing your Joomla website.
- Voila! C’est Finis!: Yes, that’s it! You have just finished uploading and installing Joomla on your website! Now head on to the /administrator directory of the website where you installed Joomla (eg mywebsite.com/administrator ) and use the login ID and password that you created during the installation process to login to your Joomla website for the first time. One other way of installing Joomla is using a tool known as “Fantastico” or “Fantastico Deluxe” depending on the version used by your Joomla hosting provider, found in your web hosting account’s “Control Panel” area. Step 1. As a first step, download Joomla, the latest edition. Joomla is available as a free software under GNU/GPL v2.0 license. It is available from Joomla official website, joomla.org. The package is available in ZIP format. Hence you should be able to view the files using WinZIP or WinRAR.
Step 2. You need an FTP client like FileZilla. You can use this to upload the files to the web hosting directory. After downloading Joomla package, unzip it and then upload it.
Step 3. As the third step, go to the file named ‘configuration.php’ and set the permission value to 666.
Step 4. Select your appropriate language. You can go to the Joomla installed directory and set the language options.
Step 5. Do the pre-installation check. This step checks your PHP version, XML support, MySQL support, etc. If you find anything to be listed as ‘NO’, Joomla will give you the steps to rectify the issue. One of the issues that usually comes up is that the configuration.php file is not writeable. In oder to rectify this issue, you can create an empty text file and save it with the name ‘configuration.php’. Save the file into the ‘joomla_root’ directory.
Step 6. After the check, if the installation is fine, Joomla will give you the License that you can review and accept.
Step 7. Enter the details of your database. You should know the details of the database you use to install Joomla. This is usually a MySQL database, with its own name, username, password, etc. Find out the details from your web host if you don’t know them.
Step 8. In order to upload files into your Joomla website, you may need to enable and configure FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Generally on Windows computers, you may not need this step.
Step 9. Under configuration menu, you can put in the name for your site, administrator email address and password, after this, click on ‘Install Sample Data’ button.
Step 10. Now, you can delete the ‘installation’ directory. You may be asked to copy the configuration.php file to the Joomla directory. Do it if asked.
