What is Meant by Medical Coding?
Medical coding is the transformation of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes. The diagnoses and procedure codes are taken from medical record documentation, such as transcription of physician’s notes, laboratory and radiologic results, are submitted to health insurance companies for reimbursement.

Medical coding is a little bit like translation. Coders take medical reports from doctors, which may include a patientâs condition, the doctorâs diagnosis, a prescription, and whatever procedures the doctor or healthcare provider performed on the patient, and turn that into a set of codes, which make up a crucial part of the medical claim.
WHY WE CODE
Letâs start with a simple question about medical coding: Why do we code medical reports? Wouldnât it be enough to list the symptoms, diagnoses, and procedures, send them to an insurance company, and wait to hear which services will be reimbursed? Medical Coding Training in Hyderabad
To answer that, we have to look at the massive amount of data that every patient visit entails. If you go into the doctor with a sore throat, and present the doctor with symptoms like a fever, sore throat, and enlarged lymph nodes, these will be recorded, along with the procedures the doctor performs and the medicine the doctor prescribes.
In a straightforward case like this, the doctor will only officially report his diagnosis, but that still means the portion of that report that will be coded contains a diagnosis, a procedure, and a prescription.
Take a step back, and this is suddenly a lot of very specific information. And thatâs just for a relatively simple doctorâs visit. What happens when a patient comes into the doctor with a complicated injury or sickness, like an ocular impairment related to their Type-2 diabetes? As injuries, conditions, and illnesses get more complex, the amount of data that needs to be conveyed to insurance companies increases significantly.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there were over 1.4 billion patient visits in the past year. Thatâs a stat that includes visits to physician offices, hospital outpatient facilities and emergency rooms. If there were just five pieces of coded information per visit, which is an almost unrealistically low estimate, thatâd be 6 billion individual pieces of information that needs to be transferred every year. In a system loaded with data, medical coding allows for the efficient transfer of huge amounts of information.
Coding also allows for uniform documentation between medical facilities. The code for streptococcal sore throat is the same in Arkansas as it is in Hawaii. Having uniform data allows for efficient research and analysis, which government and health agencies use to track health trends much more efficiently. If the CDC, for example, wants to analyze the prevalence of viral pneumonia, they can search for the number of recent pneumonia diagnoses by looking for the ICD-10-CM code.
Finally, coding allows administrations to look at the prevalence and effectiveness of treatment in their facility. This is especially important to large medical facilities like hospitals. Like government agencies tracking, say, the incidence of a certain disease, medical facilities can track the efficiency of their practice by analyzing
Now that we understand the importance of this practice, letâs take a look at the three types of code that youâll have to become familiar with as a medical coder

Advantages And Disadvantages Of A
Medical Coding Career Hyderabad
Medical Coding is a growing industry that offers a lot of potential for employers and job seekers alike. For the past few years, this industry has been considered one of the few lucrative job markets. The main task of Medical coders is to apply codes to different healthcare services and procedures and then send them to the insurance companies for payment. Just like any other field, this field also has some advantages and disadvantages that are discussed below, and any firm that wishes to adopt medical coding or any employee who seeks employment in this field must be aware of them.
The primary advantage of this field is the growth rate. Because of the high growth rate, this industry has a high demand for medical coders, and by 2020, it will start to grow faster than the average rate. Thus, it is a lucrative job market for today as well as for the times to come. The second primary advantage of this field is the ‘Work from Home’ opportunity. Since most of the employers follow this, the employees have the advantage to work from home conveniently.
Another benefit of medical coding is for the insurance companies who get everything in a specific pattern. The technical language of medicine is converted into an easy language of numbers and codes. Medical coders can specialize in a specific medical field and get a certification for it. They even have opportunities for advancement, depending on their education and continuous training, etc.
Just like any other field, medical coding hyderabad also has certain disadvantages. People who want to take up this career must be aware of these disadvantages so that they can career plans accordingly. First of all, fresh hyderabad medical coders usually have difficulty in breaking into this industry, since most of the firms have specific experience requirements.
Medical coding might also require you to relocate to another part of the world or another city or state. That way, you might be able to advance in your career but you might have trouble settling down to a new job and domestic environment.
Medical coding is a relatively new industry, having a lot of potential and scope. However, it must be kept in mind that like any other job market, this market also has certain positives and negatives that an employee has to bear with. People who are considering a career in this field must be aware of these and prepare themselves accordingly Medical coding training institute and placement
Medical coding is the transformation of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes
Medical coding can be defined as the assigning of medical codes to different diagnosis and procedures, used in a hospital or in allopathic medicine, so as to make the procedure of reimbursement easier for all the parties involved.
A medical coder should have the ability to convert a disease into ICD-10-CM code (acronym for international classification of diseases manual) and a medical diagnosis into a CPT (current procedural terminology) code. This requires accurate and detailed knowledge of codes and the procedure that they stand for. Schools and colleges that offer courses in medical billing and coding provide extensive training in this field.
There are many types of medical coding courses that teach subjects such as advanced medical coding, procedural medical coding, advanced medical coding, medical coding and billing associate certificate programs, advanced coding for the physician’s office, and advanced procedural coding. These courses are available on the Internet and in classrooms as well. Distance learning is another option that is open to people who want to pursue medical coding as a secondary career.
Some medical coding courses emphasize on topics other than coding such as accounting, business communication and professional development. Another specialization available under medical coding is medical insurance coding training. This course teaches the coder to recognize and apply the correct codes, government compliance regulations, reimbursement optimization, and eligibility for entry-level insurance position. We suggest to get CPMB.
Personnel who work in a hospital or in a physician?s office (other than doctors) have an opportunity to become successful medical coders because of the experience that they possess. Health information management coders work in hospitals and physicians’ offices, and many are freelancers. In large organizations such as hospitals and insurance companies, coders work under the supervision of a health information manager or a technician.
Medical coding is one of the fastest growing industries in the job market right now. Work from home jobs and the ability to telecommute has drawn the attention of many individuals while the aging population has increased the need for skilled workers in this field. Once an individual has educated themselves on what medical coding is, and once they have decided this is the career option for them, the next step is to obtain a proper education.
Medical coding courses are offered by numerous organizations and establishments and the choice can become overwhelming. It is important to know that not all courses are created equal. If an inadequate course is chosen you may find yourself at a loss of money and time and no closer to your goal.
Many community colleges and continuing education schools offer “introductory” courses. These are usually short compact classes that may run for a few weeks or one quarter (or semester) in length. These type of classes are usually required for individuals seeking larger degrees, such as a nursing student or medical assistant.
Taking an introductory medical coding course is a good idea if you are new to this field and are not positive that this is the right career move for you. An introductory course should explain the basics of medical coding and perhaps the basics of medical billing. You should also understand how to use the medical coding books by the end of such a course.
Taking an introductory course should be avoided, however, if you are certain in your career choice. If a career in this field is what you are seeking you must obtain certification first, and an introductory medical coding course will not be enough to prepare you for this.
Coding certification is offered by many different organizations but there are only two that are nationally recognized by employers. An organization that states it offers “national certification” at the end of its course should be scrutinized a little. Although “national certification” sounds good it honestly does not mean much.
There are only two organizations (and two certifications) that are recognized by employers nationwide, these are the CPC (certified professional coder) offered by the AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders) and the CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) offered by AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association).
While you do not have to get your education through these two organizations any education you do obtain should prepare you for their certification (the CPC or CCS). Looking through the local classified and seeing which of the two certifications the local employer’s prefer is a good place to start when deciding which certification to prepare for.
In addition to preparing you for either the CPC or CCS certification exam, medical coding courses should also include the following:
– Basic medical terminology and basic human anatomy should either be incorporated into the course or be a pre-requisite to taking the course
– A good medical coding course should be around 80 contact hours (or more), and should not be condensed into less than six months. There is a very large amount of material to cover and absorb, classes of less than 80 hours and shorter than six months do not usually produce as favorable of results.
– Medical coding courses should prepare the student completely for either the CPC certification through the AAPC or the CCS certification through AHIMA. Any other certification through any other organization will not be recognized in the medical coding community.
– It is of great benefit to have a coding course instructor who is a CPC-I, however, if they are not a CPC-I they should have the minimum of either the CPC or CCS.
– Many medical coding courses cover only two of the three medical coding books. Make sure all three coding books are covered in the course; this includes the ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS. Medesun is the best training academy for Medical coding and ICD-11 Training. Nexax trainers are MEDESUN Certified.

3. Some medical coders are allowed to be working from home from their employers. While not all employers provide such privilege to their employees, those that does will tend to attract those who are with equipped medical coding expertise but due to family issues, they cannot accept any medical coding related job which need them to be away from their home due to someone will need to take care of their old folks or young dependents.

Â

Medical coding is the process of assigning standardized numerical codes to patient health care charts. This coded information is used to ensure that insurance companies, government organizations, such as Medicare, and patients alike all receive accurate billing statements for health services performed. Medical coders perform the work of converting diagnostic and procedural information into simplified numerical codes that can be electronically processed for payment by third party payers – Insurance companies and Medicare, for example.
The process of medical coding requires an attention to detail to ensure accuracy of billing records. Because of the large dollar amounts involved, coding is a highly regulated and tightly supervised activity. Coding is also subject to frequent and rigorous audits to ensure accuracy in the billing process as there are literally billions of dollars at stake. In many ways, medical coding is a much more scrutinized activity than, say the transcription of patient records.
Medical Coding work is typically performed in hospitals or clinics, although we are beginning to see some of these coding and billing jobs migrate to work at home positions. Medical coders generally begin with a transcribed patient health record and transform procedures and diagnoses etc. into numerical codes. This takes a great deal of expertise in medical terminology and a fluency with relevant codes. Of course this requires formal training. Billing specialists takes the coded output produced by the coder and submit it for reimbursement to insurance companies, Medicare, or directly to the patient. Many times a single person will perform both the coding and the billing functions. This is particularly true in smaller clinical settings. In large, high volume health care operations, coding and billing are often organized into separate functional areas. Of the two, coding specialists generally enjoy a higher income and require more specialized training.
Medical coders are in high demand and the opportunities in the career field of health records documentation are outstanding. Coders work in hospitals and clinics and for other health care providers across the country. They play a vital role in the health information management cycle.
Increasingly, the health information management industry is taking advantage of the rapid advances in online coding technology. More and more, the work is performed online over the internet. As online coding catches on as a concept, we will likely see many of the positions that have traditionally been offered exclusively in hospitals and other health care settings begin to migrate to home based jobs. The work at home employee model has worked very well for the transcription industry and will also likely begin to gain traction in the coding industry as online coding becomes more prevalent.
Why has medical coding and billing become so important today? Well, for the simple reason that one must be able to correctly recognize/identify and then appropriately bill every single medical service that has been provided to the patient. The health care provider/physician is then paid for the service provided. To better understand the need for coding let me give a similar and more familiar example of coding.
Supermarket have various segregations / sections from grocery to books to dresses and all we do is just pick up the required things and put them into the shopping cart and roll it towards the cash counter. With so many different items and rates how is the billing managed at the supermarket? It is the barcode sticker on each of these items has the entire story of the product. Thus all that the cashier at the supermarket needs to does is hold the item in front of the barcode reader. Thus as he scans each item, its price / and all the other required details of any product that we picked up is automatically incorporated and the bill amount is calculated and generated by the computer depending on the quantity and other details.
It is very similar with medical coding and billing. Before the medical bill is prepared it is first necessary to identify the exact type of service that is given. With so many different medical specialties, procedures, and medications how are we to identify and determine the rate that has to be charged? That is why it has to undergo the medical coding process which is now a universal standard that has been developed and is being perfected. Every single process/visit by the patient whether it be for some laboratory test, for consultation with a specialist or for a surgery has been categorized and has been assigned with a standard charge/price tag. Today the complete bill or a percentage of the medical bill amount is paid by the insurance companies. The medical coding /billing companies have the responsibility of rightly identifying each category and make sure that the billing is perfectly done after the right codes have been assigned. Any discrepancies or mistake in coding /billing can usually result in the denial/delay of the claim. So what are the major categories and codes? They are,
- Diagnostic codes
- Procedural codes
- Pharmaceutical codes
- Topographical codes
Â
Medical coding can be defined as the procedure in which alphanumerical codes are assigned to the different procedures that come under allopathic medicine. These codes are assigned so as to make the procedure of reimbursement easy for all the parties involved.
There are many schools that teach medical coding and the course duration is usually 200 to 230 hours. Apart from codes, these schools also teach subjects such as Law, Physiology, Medicine Terminology, Reimbursement Methodologies, Ethics, Anatomy, Medical Information and Office Practice.
The eligibility condition for these schools is high school graduation. Computer skills are considered necessary in order to get into this stream because a coder has to work on computers all day long. People who are independent decision-makers and who are meticulous about their work would love this job because it doesn?t require a lot of communication with other people.
The training for this course not only involves study of medical terminology but also puts some emphasis on computer literacy and English comprehension. Topics that are covered in the training usually include anatomy and physiology, computer applications, expository writing (prose that is informative in nature), study of diseases, introduction to information technology, basic ICD9 coding, pharmacology, basic CPT coding, advance coding and reimbursement, medical coding and professional practice. In addition to the above subjects, good communication skills and speech communication are the other two subjects that may form a part of the curriculum.
A person doing this job should be able to comprehend and clarify insurance stipulations and reimbursement to clients and patients alike, precisely interpret and complete claim forms, carry out bookkeeping activities, handle medical billing procedures, follow-up with insurance companies and patients on unpaid bills and bill insurance companies and patients without delay. This requires comprehension of medical terms, diseases, and effective English writing and communication skills.

Careers in medical fields are full of responsibilities, and dexterity in the specialized line of medical affairs is important. As time goes by, a career in the medical profession becomes more of a challenge, adventure and competition.
A medical career is often the most admired career of the world. A medical career is humanitarian, noble and is undoubtedly holds a very bright future for those who are after it. In terms of money, this field is promising. But in order to get into the medical arena, one has to have the patience and spend time in places like medical school, learning human anatomy and biology. The medical world has become a hive of inventions, discoveries and knowledge, based on up-to-date awareness. Therefore, it requires more knowledge to get established as a professional.
In recent days the coding industry offers many career opportunities to those who have certificates in coding. Starting from physician’s offices and hospitals to healthcare plans, medical coding certification finds its way into the industry. There are a few organizations that provide certificates in medical coding. One of them is the AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association), which has provided over 50,000 certified medical coders with proper certification. Broadly, there are three types of certificates issued by most of the organizations in the field of medical coding. They are:
(a) Certified Coding Associate (CCA)
(b) Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) and
(c) Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based (CCS-P)
Other providers of such certificates are the University of Phoenix, Boston University, Center for Professional Education, University of Connecticut, University of Massachusetts – U Mass Online, Netcom Information Technology, Sacramento State University, Northern Illinois University and many others.
