About exams
AHIMA follows industry standards and best practices to create and update all exams. Subject matter experts (PME) are involved in every step of the exam development process, which is overseen by AHIMA testing professionals.
Exam questions
AHIMA exams contain a wide variety of questions or item types that require you to use your knowledge, skills or experience to choose the best answer. Each exam contains scored and pre-test questions that are randomly spaced throughout the exam. Questions before the test will NOT be included in the final results.
Traditional multiple choice
These elements contain a root (or a question) and four (4) answer options, including only one (1) correct answer.
Multiple choice, multiple answer
These are multiple choice items, except that there are two (2) or more correct answers. The article will show you the number of correct options.
Scenarios
Scenario questions represent typical situations followed by a series of scenario-based assessment items.
Questions before the test
AHIMA is committed to offering exams containing current and relevant content. We do this by examining current issues and developing new ones to reflect changes in the job.
All AHIMA certification exams may contain a series of pre-test or “pilot test” questions. These questions are NOT graded. The purpose of pre-testing questions in an exam is to collect data on the performance of these items.
In order to accurately test the performance of these elements, they are not identified. Including pre-test questions in an exam is standard practice used by many state and national exam programs. This is a critical step in the development of additional test points and in ensuring the continued reliability and validity of the test. The time allotted for testing was evaluated to ensure that there was sufficient time to answer the assessed and pre-test questions.
All exam questions are categorized according to one of the following cognitive levels:
- Cognitive level
- goal
- Performance requirements
- Recall (RE)
- Mainly measures memory.
- Identify terms, specific facts, methods, procedures, basic concepts, basic theories, principles and processes.
- Application (AP)
- Measure the ease of interpretation of limited data.
Apply concepts and principles to new situations; Recognize the relationships between data; Apply laws and theories to practical situations
